​Thoughts on Ranked Cards in Aethermancer



I've been adding some ranked cards to aethermancer lately. I think ranked cards are here to stay - I like how they cause you to think more about your opponent's class's generally capabilities instead of their specific cards.

The obvious question: What base spells are expected to be ranked in the future?

Creatures: Probably never. A creature's max health is determined by its base stats, and different ranks with different base stats would not be great for the UI.

(Sorry for the formatting, I tried to make it somewhat non-terrible.)

1[W] Already Ranked.
2Believe it or not, single target healing is more problematic
design-wise than AoE healing.
That's because someone
could make a "protect the king" style
army, with say bishop, empower, and this.

don't line up great,
This would require the
Flame Wave treatment to give me the granularity
I need to properly balance.
Similar problems as A6, but less
severe. I have ideas on how to
merge ritual of glory into this effect.

6[F] Already ranked.Probably never. There's really only
three bot strikes you could do:
2 mana for 4+ damage,
4 or 5 mana for 5+ damage, and perhaps 7 mana for 6+ damage.
That's not interesting enough to make ranked.
Similar problems as A6, but less severe. I might do it
sometime, to give Chronomancer
a few more toys to play with.

8[W] Probably, but I'm not sure. I have some ideas, but I want to see how Stone Rain plays out first. Global sweepers in Aethermancer demand a lot of respect, and this would affect the Antimage class a lot.
Similar problems to A3 but more severe.
Besides, Greater Lightning and Forbidden Lightning
already cover all the ones
I could make pretty well.
9[F] Probably never - there are some design issues with the idea.
If it does become ranked,
the basic version would have to use a formula
other than +50% rounded up to give me more granularity. Besides, ranked tornado fills a lot of the niche.

11[F] Maybe. It's potentially doable, but there's a lot of design issues I don't have a great idea how to solve.
