Aethermancer Gameplay Walkthrough
Let's do a quick tutorial of how to play aethermancer. All you have to do is to open the game and press play, and wait to get matched.
Here, we got matched against an AI. In the top right of our screen, we have the game board. Immediately to the left of that, we have our life totals. As you can see, we started the game with 40 life and our opponent started with 39 life.
Below that, we have our cards. They are grouped into 5 columns: Fire, Water, Air, Earth, and Aether. Each requires its own mana to play. We can see our mana at the top of each column. (From here on out, Fire, Water, Air, and Earth will be abbreviated as F, W, A, and E respectively.)
Playing a card is pretty simple. we just drag a card from our hand to the board. The harder question is: which card to play? This is equivalent to asking what move to make in Chess. I can't fully answer that question, but I can give some general principles.
On the first turn, our goal is to get more mana so we can make more powerful plays in the coming turns.
Our hand will always contain exactly one of F3, W4, or E5 to that end. Playing one of these on turn 1 is solid, and when you get better at the game, you'll learn when to make exceptions to this rule. We were dealt W4. Let's play it!
Our opponent has played his own mana generator. This one creates 2 mana per turn. That's a lot of mana! We don't want to let that survive for long! We'll play F4 to try to kill it. F4 has haste, which allows it to attack immediately, which means we can kill it faster.
Now, our opponent has played one of their aether cards: Sanian Berserker. Left uncontested, it can deal 5 damage a turn to us. Our life total is high, so we don't need to kill it urgently, but it would not be wise to leave it uncontested. By playing F1, we can contest it in a cost-efficient way.
Our opponent played another E5. Let's deal with this one in a different way. Our A12, Titan, deals 10 damage to its blocker when summoned, letting it kill it in one shot! Unfortunately, we're 2 mana short of casting it. We play our Aether 5, Divine Intervention, to set up our next turn.
Our opponent plays another Sanian Berserker. Let's continue with our plan and use Titan.
Now, we have a lot of earth unused. Let's not leave it idle. Our E10 can put the earth to good use.
Our opponent used Tornado to destroy our E10. It looks like we've made no progress, but that's not true. While we have been trading plays, our creatures have been attacking. Thanks to this, we have an opportunity to pivot. By playing A3 to clear the blocker from our fire Drake, we can reduce our opponent's life total to 8. This puts them under serious life pressure!
The game is ending soon, and unused mana is worth nothing when the game ends. Time to use our mana! W9 puts a strong body on the board.
Our opponent played E3 to try to stay alive. While this bought them a turn, it doesn't help their board state at all. With F9, we can completely clear their board, leaving them wide open to attack next turn!
Now, our opponent is low enough that we can finish them off from hand. Each game, you will be dealt exactly one of F11, A6, or E6. These cards are a great way to close out games!
